WEST NEW YORK, New Jersey (AP) -- An excommunicated Roman Catholic archbishop continued to defy the Vatican when he installed two married priests as bishops on Sunday.
In front of a sea of reporters and photographers and several dozen congregants, Raymond A. Grosswirth of Rochester, New York, and Dominic Riccio, of the Newark Archdiocese, were installed by Zambian Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo at the Trinity Reformed Church. The ceremony concluded a two-day convention of Milingo's advocacy group, Married Priests Now!
In a visible break from tradition, the wives of both men helped their husbands on with their vestments before each man was anointed.
Milingo, 76, installed four married men as Roman Catholic bishops in September, including Peter Paul Brennan of New York and Patrick Trujillo of Newark. Milingo was later excommunicated by the Vatican, and Pope Benedict XVI followed that decision by convening a summit that reaffirmed mandatory celibacy for clergy.
Members of Milingo's group believe that reinstating priests who are married would help ease a shortage of priests. According to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University, the number of priests has dropped from 58,600 in 1965 to 41,790 this year.
Milingo has called celibacy "outdated" and was married in 2001 to a Korean acupuncturist chosen for him by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon in a mass wedding performed by Moon's Unification Church.
Milingo's ties to Moon, whose doctrines are considered beyond the bounds of traditional Christianity, have caused consternation in Catholic circles. Moon's American Clergy Leadership Conference paid for much of Milingo's conference this weekend.

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 -- A panel of rabbis opened the way Wednesday to allow same-sex commitment ceremonies and the ordination of gays within Conservative Judaism, which occupies a difficult middle ground between orthodoxy and liberalism in American Judaism.
The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards committee accepted three teshuvot, or answers, to the question of whether Jewish law permits homosexual sex. Two of the answers uphold the status quo, which forbids homosexuality. But one of them allows ordination of gay men and lesbians and same-sex ceremonies while maintaining a ban on anal sex.
Four of the committee's 25 members resigned in protest of the decision.
It takes the votes of just six of the panel's 25 members to declare an answer to be valid -- meaning that it is a well-founded interpretation of Jewish law, not that it is the only legitimate interpretation. As Wednesday's vote made clear, it is possible to approve contradictory answers.
Because the papers are contradictory it will be up to individual rabbis and seminaries to decide what to do. Some Conservative Jewish leaders predicted that some rabbis will continue to refuse to allow same sex ceremonies and they said no rabbi would be required to perform them.
The paper that allows for the ordination of gays and performance of same sex ceremonies was written by three rabbis -- Elliot Dorff, of Los Angeles; Daniel Nevins, of Farmington Hills, Mich.; and Avram Reisner, of Baltimore.
There are four main Conservative Jewish seminaries. One of them, the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, is expected to begin ordaining gays in the near future. The movement's flagship seminary, the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, is likely to take more time. Its new chancellor Arnold Eisen, has said he personally favors the change, but will allow the entire faculty to debate and vote on a recommendation. Two other seminaries, in Israel and Argentina, are more traditional in their outlook and may adopt the change slowly, if at all.

STATEMENT BY JENNIFER CHRISLER OF FAMILY PRIDE:The front page of the Washington Post's website announced today that Mary Cheney, Vice-President Dick Cheney's gay daughter, is pregnant. Mary and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are described as "ecstatic" about the arrival of their first child, due in late spring. The news of Mary Cheney's pregnancy exemplifies, once again, how the best interests of children are denied when lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens are treated unfairly and accorded different and unequal rights and responsibilities than other parents. As Mary and Heather enter into the life-changing roles of parents, they will quickly face the reality the reality that no matter how loved their child will be - by its mothers and its grandparents, aunts & uncles, cousins and close family friends - he or she will never have the same protections that other children born to heterosexual couples enjoy. Mary and Heather currently live in Virginia. Unless they move to a handful of less restrictive states, Heather will never be able to have a legal relationship with her child.The tragedy here is that this climate of hostility toward the LGBT community has only worsened during the Administration of which Vice President Cheney - or Grandfather Cheney in this context - has been second in command. Vice President Cheney has been complicit in the largest full-scale attack on the LGBT community in modern history. He, his President and his political party have repeatedly targeted the LGBT community and LGBT families for scapegoating as part of their calculated political strategy and have attacked at all levels the rights and protections his own daughter will need to ensure a strong, healthy, legally protected family. Grandfather Cheney will no doubt face a lifetime of sleepless nights as he reflects on the irreparable harm he and his Administration have done to the millions of American gay and lesbian parents and their children.

Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.
It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.

Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.
News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.
Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla -- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family. In an interview with the Post six months ago, when asked if she and Poe wanted children, Cheney said that was a "conversation I think I should have with Heather first."
In November, Virginia voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions; state law is unclear on whether Poe could have full legal rights as a parent of Cheney's child. The circumstances of the pregnancy will remain private, said the source close to the couple. This is the first child for both.

I'm very happy when I wake up in the morning and I hear that a country once famous for apartheid now has got the most advanced constitution in the world. I'm very happy as well when I hear that the country which provides "illegal immigrants" in the United States works so strongly on civil rights and civil unions. I'm very sad instead when I wake up in the morning and I still see racism, homophobia and xenophobia in the most advanced country in the world, what the Americans call "the best country in the world" ... without knowing anything about the other countries. A country that always says "we have the first emendment while the others don't have", but this is the country where religious integralism has more power than ever and the president doesn't give a sh** about the separation between state and church. The same president who ignore the results of the November elections and the popular will and try to sell the concept of "we are in Iraq to export our democracy" while he behaves like a dictator in a country that is an oligarchy managed by the big corporations. Teaching is a fine and a delicate job and requires a humble, passionate, loving, team-working, liberal and non-violent mentality none of the idustrialized countries has today. The only thing we are good at is having guns, violent movies, bashing gays, change constitution to separate class A and class B citizens and finally believe that Christ, Moses and Muhammed hated gays and love wars. So, today is a very sad day here and a very happy day in South Africa and in Mexico, mostly because poor countries are more humble and more tolerant than rich countries and they could teach us many more lessons of life than those we could ever impose to them.
Same-sex marriage now legal in South Africa
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- With the deputy president's signature on a new law, South Africa on Thursday became the first country in Africa and only the fifth in the world to legalize same-sex marriages.
The Civil Union Act entered into force on the eve of a December 1 deadline set by the Constitutional Court for the government to change its marriage legislation to ensure full equality for gays and lesbians.
Gay rights groups have welcomed the law, although they criticized provisions allowing clergy and civil marriage officers to turn away gay couples if their consciences prevented them from marrying them.
Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka signed the law in her capacity as acting president because President Thabo Mbeki is in Nigeria.
South Africa recognized the rights of gay people in the constitution adopted after apartheid ended in 1994, at a time when leaders were determined to bury all kinds of legal discrimination a thing. The constitution, the first in the world to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, provides a powerful legal tool for gay rights activists even though South Africa remains conservative on such issues.
The governing African National Congress had to push the legislation through despite reservations from some of its own members. Influential traditional leaders said the legislation violated African cultural norms. The Roman Catholic Church and Muslim groups -- and many other religious organizations -- denounced it as violating the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. The Anglican church said it was up to individual ministers to decide whether to use the "opt out" clause, while liberal churches like the Metropolitan Churches Community were in favor.
The National Assembly passed the legislation earlier this month and the National Council of Provinces approved it on Tuesday. Mlambo-Ngcuka's signature was the final legal step.
"There will be a huge response from same-sex couples who have waited such a long time for their relationship to be recognized," predicted Melanie Judge of the lesbian and gay project, OUT.
Janine Pressman, a pastor with the Glorious Light Metropolitan Community Churches in the capital, Pretoria, said she hoped to marry a couple on Saturday, provided the paperwork could be rushed through.
Priests wanting to wed same sex couples at a religious ceremony have to apply for permission from the Home Affairs Ministry and possibly undergo exams to get their license, ministry spokesman Jacky Mashapu said.
This could take two to three weeks, he said. But he added that the ministry wanted to speed through the applications.
Civil unions, without a religious component, could be performed virtually on the spot, subject to completion of the proper paperwork, he said.
"We are ready to go," Mashapu said.
The Civil Union Act provides for the "voluntary union of two persons, which is solemnized and registered by either a marriage or civil union."
Radio talk shows and newspaper columns have highlighted opposition to same-sex marriages in a country where gays and lesbians are victims of violent attacks because of their sexual orientation.
South Africa is only the fifth country in the world to legalize gay marriages. It is the first in Africa, where homosexuality is illegal in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana and most other sub-Saharan countries.
Judge, from OUT, said the public reaction had "forced us to confront the deep-seated prejudice and intolerance against gays and lesbians. It's a day to day reality," she said.
"It's been quite a frightening process to see the level of hatred that has been openly expressed against this minority," she said.
Mexico: 'SI' to gay civil union
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico City's assembly on Thursday passed legislation to legally recognize gay civil unions in the capital, the first such vote by a legislative body in the history of the conservative, predominantly Roman Catholic country.
Mexico City Mayor Alejandro Encinas has spoken in favor of the bill and was expected to sign it into law, while at least one conservative non-governmental group said it was considering seeking a court injunction against the measure.
The bill, which would not approve gay marriage, allows same-sex couples to register their union with civil authorities, granting them inheritance rights and other benefits typically given to spouses. Heterosexual couples who are not legally married can also be registered under the bill.
"This law ... does not require anyone else to change their thinking, nor does it hurt the concept of the nuclear family," said legislator Juan Bustos of the left-leaning Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD, which has pushed for the law in the capital for years.
The bill has been severely criticized by the Catholic Church and conservative civil groups in the country, which is 90 percent Roman Catholic. The Mexican Council of Bishops has said the law is the first step toward legalizing gay marriage and adoption by gays, while the conservative National Parents Union has characterized it as "aberrant."
While homosexuality is still taboo in many rural parts of Latin America, the region's urban areas are becoming more tolerant. If the law is enacted, Mexico City will join the ranks of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, which already have approved civil unions.
At the national level, lawmakers in Costa Rica and Colombia have debated, but not passed, similar measures.
Law voted 43-17
The Mexico City assembly passed the measure by a vote of 43-17, with all the opposition coming from the conservative National Action Party of President Vicente Fox and President-elect Felipe Calderon. The party is known for its opposition to abortion and support for traditional families.
PAN lawmaker Paula Adriana Soto said the law simply "conceals a marriage between people of the same sex," which is prohibited by Mexico City civil law.
Mexico City, with a population of 8.7 million, is a federal district similar to Washington, D.C., with its own legislature. The PRD dominates the assembly, which is the first in Mexico to approve such a law.
Legislators in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila on the Texas border introduced a similar bill this week.
As the debate over the bill took place Thursday, groups both in favor and against the measure rallied outside the legislative building, hurling insults at each other.
Jorge Serrano, of the National Pro-Life Committee, said his group would consider seeking a court injunction in the next few days to prevent the legislation from going into effect.
"This is really something sad for our country and it is a direct attempt against the family, because it constitutes the legalization of homosexuality and obviously it is going to lead to an increase in this social wrong," Serrano told The Associated Press.
Tito Vasconcelos, one of Mexico City's leading gay activists, said the law represents "Mexico's entrance into the first world of democracy, along with other countries that recognize this type of union."
Elsewhere on Thursday, a parliamentary committee approved proposals for same-sex marriages in South Africa, clearing the way for the passage of legislation there.
The Netherlands, Canada, Belgium and Spain have legalized same-sex marriage, while several other European countries have laws giving same-sex couples the right to form legally binding civil partnerships. In the U.S., only the state of Massachusetts allows gay marriage, while Vermont and Connecticut permit civil unions.

Wal-Mart becomes gay-friendly

The retail giant has been walking a thin line between gay rights groups and Christian conservative groups. But there's no backing out of the issue now, says Fortune's Marc Gunther.

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- No big company wants to get caught in the culture wars. But staying on the sidelines isn't easy when it comes to gay rights.
Just ask Wal-Mart (Charts). As the world's largest retailer has become more gay-friendly, it has provoked a backlash from Christian conservative groups.
Corporate America embraces gays and lesbians

The American Family Association and its founder, the Rev. Donald Wildmon, called for a boycott of Wal-Mart during the Thanksgiving weekend, and then called it off abruptly after the company said it would "not make corporate contributions to support or oppose highly controversial issues unless they directly relate to our ability to serve our customers."
Keeping its promises
Does that mean Wal-Mart's pulling back its support of gay groups? Probably not. Mona Williams, a company spokeswoman, told me that Wal-Mart intends to be "more thoughtful" and "more selective" when it makes contributions, directing them to "specific projects" rather than to supporting "an organization across the board." But she also said the company would remain "100 percent supportive" of its own, newly-organized group of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) employees, called Wal-Mart Pride
Here's some history: Since Wal-Mart Pride was sanctioned in 2005, Wal-Mart has supported several gay causes. Wal-Mart donated $60,000 to Out & Equal, a nonprofit group that brings together gay-employee networks from companies across America, and this fall it sent about 40 Pride members to Out & Equal's annual convention.
Wal-Mart also joined the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, an organization of about 24,000 gay and lesbian-owned businesses, and several Wal-Mart execs bought tickets to the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay-advocacy group.
It turns out that much of this activity can be traced back to an unassuming middle manager who several years ago asked Wal-Mart to live up to the words in the cheer - "It's My Wal-Mart" - that its people shout out whenever groups of them get together.
Early in 2003, Ken Pearson, who works at Wal-Mart University, the company's training arm, came back from a corporate meeting where the theme was "It's My Wal-Mart" and speakers included the African-American poet Maya Angelou. "But I didn't really feel like it was my Wal-Mart, as a gay man," Pearson says.
Back then, the company did not have a written policy protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) employees against discrimination. Nor did it provide health benefits to the same-sex partners of gays and lesbians.
So Pearson composed an e-mail to a Wal-Mart vice chairman, explaining that he is gay, asking if he was welcome at Wal-Mart and outlining his concerns.
"I sat there shaking," Pearson recalls. "Can I hit send? There's nothing to protect me from losing my job." Soon after dispatching the e-mail, Pearson was invited to meet with the executive, who told him that the letter had moved him and that things would change.
They did, and fast. In May 2003, Wal-Mart added protection for sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policy. As it happened, a shareholders meeting organized by the Pride Foundation, a Seattle-based nonprofit that supports gay causes, also had been asking the company to do so.
Wal-Mart's new 'green' image
Belying its Bible belt roots, Wal-Mart has since opened discussions with such gay rights leaders as Joe Solmonese and Daryl Herrshaft of the Human Rights Campaign and Selisse Berry, executive director of Out & Equal. The company hired Witeck-Combs, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm that specializes in marketing to gay consumers.
After visits to Bentonville, most came away impressed with Wal-Mart's sincerity. Selisse Berry of Out & Equal says: "The GLBT group is very committed and passionate, and they seem to be gathering more and more executive support."
This year, Wal-Mart donated three scholarships to the Point Foundation, which supports students who are marginalized - often, cast off by their families - because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It also sponsored a panel at the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association convention.
More work ahead
Pearson, who is 34, says the Pride group has made headway at Wal-Mart by focusing on the business case for equality. They have argued that Wal-Mart, by changing, will be able to attract and engage gay employees and reach more gay consumers, especially as it expands into urban markets. This year, some Wal-Marts sold gay-themed jewelry. "I didn't expect this much movement this quickly," he says.
There's more work ahead. Wal-Mart still does not offer health care benefits to the domestic partners of its GLBT employees. More than half of Fortune 500 companies do so.
In the Corporate Equality Index published by the Human Rights Campaign, Wal-Mart scores a 65 - up from 14 in 2002, but well shy of the 100 percent score notched by more than 100 big companies.
What's more, Wal-Mart Pride draws nearly all of its members from the home office. Pearson and his allies want to expand into the field, where most of the company's 1.3 million employees work. As more of Wal-Mart's GLBT employees come out of the closet, their clout inside the company will grow.
"I worked for our company for 16 years," says David Yates, a leader of Wal-Mart Pride. "The word gay had almost never been mentioned. Or it was whispered."
Now it's being said often, and out loud.
Which means it's probably too late for Wal-Mart to reverse its gay-friendly course.

World AIDS Day: Being accountable (from the Advocate)

Although "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise" will be the ongoing umbrella theme the World AIDS Campaign is using for World AIDS Day on December 1, the organization, which has been charged with overseeing the global event since 2005, has decided to stress the additional concept of "Accountability" this year.

Tom Scalway, spokesman for the organization, says that after the directors discussed their goals for World AIDS Day, they found that "the lowest common denominator of all these different things is that what civil society should be doing is actually making sure that policymakers keep their promises on whatever the issue might be." "It's easy to pay lip service to AIDS," he says. "It's far harder to deliver. So the struggle is for us to try to support some kind of social movement that does actually engage in these declarations and does engage in these political commitments."

One benchmark the World AIDS Campaign is pushing for is universal access to treatment and prevention services through the workplace by 2010. The campaign is expecting 30,000 demonstrators in Cape Town, South Africa, to demand such access, since the country is perhaps the most notable for its resistant governmental response to the AIDS crisis. And 50,000 more people are expected to march on the chambers of parliament in India, where HIV's impact is accelerating rapidly among the general population.

"These huge mobilizations will help put the pressure to some degree on politicians," Scalway says, "and we'll try to get as much coverage in the media as we can."

The World AIDS Campaign is relying on global unions and labor organizations as well as faith-based and youth groups to organize events around the day. A global transit union is planning outreach programs for truckers, who are believed to be major carriers of HIV in places like India and African countries. The international group Dance4Life is arranging AIDS dance-a-thons in several countries around the world.

Individuals and groups are being asked to make a commitment to get involved -- keeping with this year's focus on accountability—and to share how they will do that online at www.worldaidscampaign.net/accountability. The World AIDS Campaign has also put out a call to wear the color red on World AIDS Day. In tandem with this request, musician and activist Bono has helped launch Project Red (www.joinred.com), which is promoting various red-colored products, a portion of whose profits will go to the Global Fun

Mexico: 'SI' to gay civil union

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico City's assembly on Thursday passed legislation to legally recognize gay civil unions in the capital, the first such vote by a legislative body in the history of the conservative, predominantly Roman Catholic country.
Mexico City Mayor Alejandro Encinas has spoken in favor of the bill and was expected to sign it into law, while at least one conservative non-governmental group said it was considering seeking a court injunction against the measure.
The bill, which would not approve gay marriage, allows same-sex couples to register their union with civil authorities, granting them inheritance rights and other benefits typically given to spouses. Heterosexual couples who are not legally married can also be registered under the bill.
"This law ... does not require anyone else to change their thinking, nor does it hurt the concept of the nuclear family," said legislator Juan Bustos of the left-leaning Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD, which has pushed for the law in the capital for years.
The bill has been severely criticized by the Catholic Church and conservative civil groups in the country, which is 90 percent Roman Catholic. The Mexican Council of Bishops has said the law is the first step toward legalizing gay marriage and adoption by gays, while the conservative National Parents Union has characterized it as "aberrant."
While homosexuality is still taboo in many rural parts of Latin America, the region's urban areas are becoming more tolerant. If the law is enacted, Mexico City will join the ranks of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, which already have approved civil unions.
At the national level, lawmakers in Costa Rica and Colombia have debated, but not passed, similar measures.

After two years, Britney has had enough

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Britney Spears has skated away from K-Fed.
The pop star, 24, was seen skating at the Rockefeller Center ice rink Tuesday, looking upbeat in a video posted on the Web site TMZ.com, hours after abruptly filing for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court. Her divorce petition cited irreconcilable differences with husband Kevin Federline and came just two months after the birth of their second child.
The date of the separation after two years of marriage was given as Monday. (Watch clips of the couple before the breakup and Spears appearances -- :46)
Spears did not seek spousal support but asked for sole custody of her two sons with Federline, one-year-old Sean Preston, and James Jayden, born September 12.

Oct. 30, 2006 - Will last week’s New Jersey Supreme Court decision on gay marriage have an impact on next week’s election? The ruling opened the door to make the state the second in the nation—after Massachusetts—to allow gay marriage by finding that the legislature must offer same-sex couples some form of marriage or civil union.

Gay marriage was one of the hot-button issues in 2004, but Evan Wolfson, executive director of the gay-rights group Freedom to Marry and author of “Why Marriage Matters” (Simon & Schuster, 2004) doesn’t believe it’s likely to resonate at the polls on Nov. 7. He spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Debra Rosenberg about the court decision, the upcoming vote and the struggle over gay marriage.

Excerpts:

What do you make of the New Jersey decision?

I think it’s a very powerful decision that illustrates the difference between happy and satisfied. I’m happy to see a unanimous high court ruling that gay couples must be treated fairly. But I’m not satisfied because the high court opened the door to equality but didn’t finish the job [because it referred the decision to the legislature]. There’s only one way to provide equality and that is by equal treatment.

New Jersey court recognizes same-sex unions

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- New Jersey's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that same-sex couples are entitled to the same rights as heterosexual couples.

But the court left it to the Legislature to determine whether the state will honor gay marriage or some other form of civil union.

The case was brought by seven gay couples who say the state constitution allows them to marry.

New Jersey is one of only five U.S. states with neither a law nor a state constitutional amendment blocking same-sex marriage. As a result, the state is more likely than others to allow gays to wed, said advocacy groups on both sides.

Only Massachusetts -- by virtue of a 2003 ruling from that state's top court -- allows gay marriages.

Proponents and opponents from across the country are watching the case closely.

"New Jersey is a stepping stone," said Matt Daniels, president of the Virginia-based Alliance for Marriage, a group pushing for an amendment to the federal Constitution to outlaw same-sex marriage. "It's not about New Jersey."

From a practical standpoint, the Massachusetts court decision made little impact nationally because the state has a law barring out-of-state couples from wedding there if their marriages would not be recognized in their home states.

New Jersey has no such law.

She is probably one of the most controversial human beings which crossed our lives passing from the 20th to the the 21st century.

She is neither a president nor a pope, she doesn't posses neither the CNN nor the New York Times, so she doesn't have the power to drive people's thinking in a certain direction. She doesn't write articles and she doesn't have an entire cast of people writing her sentences.

She didn't create any computer or cellphone revolution like Microsoft, Apple or Nokia. She is on cellphones or on the I-pods but she is much more famous than them.

She didn't create a search engine which links to the entire world like Google, Yahoo or recently Jumptap on the cellphone but you don't need a computer to know where she is and what she does.

She's not a mass market product like Coca Cola or McDonald and you don't need to be thirsty or hungry to have her. Her music comes in your ears and you just don't stop moving and singing.

She is not young but her video clips always showed the last trends (remember the Vogue style which invaded New York in the 8o's as well as the Crankers and the Clawns in L.A. just now)

But when you say the name "Madonna" wherever you are in the world they know you don't mean "the mother of Christ". As a matter of fact there are only two names everybody in the world always remembers: the Pope and Madonna (the Christ and the anti-Christ .... up to you who is who).

Why is she so special and unique?

Because she started a social liberation and a sexual revolution with "Like a Vergin" and "Vogue" in a world which spent more time judging than building, destroying than having fun, killing than being compassianate and diplomatic.
After the 60's with the Vietnam and the 70's with the terror in Europe and the post-Watergate in the U.S., the 90's needed something new and motivational .... n-o-m-a-t-t-e-r-w-h-a-t.

She understood that diplomacy is a powerful machine not to be used with whom who doesn't use it, so she was never diplomatic.

She became a political machine in her late fourties. She is now the only person who can perform accusing the Pope himself in Italy in front of a totally crowded Olympic Stadium.

There are no colors to describe her because she's black or white, the only two colors she used in her first music videos. The outcome of it is that people has no average feelings for her.

Love and veneration on one side versus irritation and rage on the other side. Sometimes both in the same time.
She makes and made big mistakes that people forgave quite quickly, while many other people have very hard time to get an easy forgiveness.

The new Madonna is just the other face of a same coin, a "brand" called Madonna that everybody, even her enemies, sings and dances.

"Do you mind if I call you James rather than Governor? I feel much better" I said.

This way we started our short conversation in the auditorium of a major school in New York during a major event organized by the New York Times to introduce govern McGreevy's last book "The Confession".
This book talks about New Jersey's Governor McGreevy's coming out as a "gay American" in August 2004 in a press conference together with his "now ex-wife". During the press conference he resigned as Governor admitting he put an Israeli citizen, Golan Cipel whom he had a sexual relationship with, in his payroll.

Golan Cipel accused Jim McGreevey of sexual harassment blackmailing him as well.

My first reaction at that time was not so positive. I tried to put myself in Jim's wife shoes forced to attend a press conference very humiliating for her, but differently from many people I never thought Jim was a lier and had to resign.

Two years later I heard about Jim McGreevy's book "The Confession" and that he was going to be a guest at "Larry King live": I had to see this.

When Larry King asked him about his wife and why she had to be at the press conference, Jim simply replied that it was her decision because she is a "lady" and she had to be next to her husband.

That was the moment I started changing my opinion about Jim McGreevy and I tried to understand what a terrible life he had to pass through (47 years in the closet) and even when he decided to put Cipel on a payroll I now believe he did it because he was in love with him, totally lonely and that was the way to keep the only "real" part of his fake life with him in a moment in which nobody, except Cipel, knew anything about him being gay and he was extremely vulnerable.

Many straight and gay people said the worse things about him but he had also many sustainers and I'm now one of them. So, when I asked him I didn't want to call him "Governor", I did it because I needed to be closer to the man than to the writer, the politician, the cheater.

"So Jim, I have this question for you, are you ready?"

"Yes, I am" he said.

"When Larry King interviewed you, I was extremely touched when you said that gay people have no heritage when they are kids. It's so true.
Any straight kid is taught who he is, where he comes from and where he's going to and why he is right on everything . So he is spoiled to be right and it's a given. It's the 'imprinting' and no one can reply because that's it.
For gay kids it's different because the 'imprinting' of being who you will never be just doesn't work. We live in a society in which if you are gay they force you to lie when you are a kid, they want you to lie and they are very happy if you lie when you grow up, they want to hide you if you come out and, if you really are an open gay, they fight against you.
Whichever lie you said to protect yourself against all this pressure, you are forgiven straight away.
Said that, I strongly believe the only person you have to alopogize to about your extra-marriage affair is your wife and even in that case, you lied to survive, while the 99.9% of the cheaters and the divorced people they lied knowning they had a choice not to do that and that the society protect them no matter what. Actually some times straight ex-marriage affair are seen like: this is a real man!

So, my quetion is? Why the hell did you resign? You had the right to be there. You are smart, compassionate, honest, prepared and doing a good job."

"I think I did the best thing in my life" he said. "History books will all say that I resigned in disgrace.That misses the point entirely. Resigning was the single most important thing I have ever done. I'd rejected a political solution to my troubles and took the more painful route: penance and atonement, the way to grace."

"Jim, honesty, I still believe you are too apologetic and you still feel guilty, which doesn't surprise me because it's only 2 years you are out of the closet surrounded by your Irish catholic guilty shadows which ... don't help. You really had the opportunity to be a gay Governor until the end, you missed this opportunity and you know it will not so easy to have gay Governors in any State of the United States for a very long time. Bill Clinton didn't resign for his Lewinsky affair (right move) so why you?

Women and African Americans are still in line to be presidents .... so you lost a great opportunity".

The most difficult thing today is trying to find an official picture of Mark Foley on internet surronded by young people. They are all thumbnails but none of them is .... visible, even if the probable ages of the men surrounding congressman Foley are not less than 35 years old.

What's happening in the repubblican party? Are they becoming democratic? They always pointed their fingers against the Clintons and the McGreeveys but now they have to deal with the Pirros and even worse ... the Foleys.

Mark Foley is very "lucky" because the teenager is 16 years old so for someone he is not a pedophile (at least this is what his major supporters in the Republican party say as if you can define the age of a kid for a pedophile). If the teen was 14 years old the probability of being a pedophile was much higher. He could at least wait for an 18 years old kid this time but really ... who cares!!!

Anyway, this story looks more and more like the sad version of the "Birdcage", when the head of the conservative party dies in the bed of a "black" teenager prostitute.

Probably when Mak Foley was "working" for a better immigration he was already thinking about the hoge number of illegal jobs he could provide to the Mexican teenagers.

The gay communities are very happy now, because finally the sustainers of banning gay wedding and changing the costitution have to deal with their internal much more complex issues.

It's also funny that many religious organizations didn't take a position yet ... may be because they were among the biggest sustainers of Mark Foley campaigns and now they are back to the dark age of the pedophile priests.

It's not a "Glory, Glory Alleluja" anymore but a scandal "marchin on" towards the midterm elections where the electors will still find Mark Foley name at the ballot because they didn't have time to change his name with the new candidate.

Report: Foley allegedly tried to meet page:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Instant messages, released by ABC News Monday and attributed to former Rep. Mark Foley, suggest he tried to arrange a meeting with a teenage page in Washington.
Foley, a Florida Republican, resigned Friday after his alleged e-mail and instant-message contacts with pages were reported by the media. Both federal and state law enforcement officers have said they have launched investigations into Foley's actions.
Foley Monday announced that he had entered an alcoholism treatment center.
CNN cannot verify whether the instant message comments reported by ABC actually came from the congressman.
According to ABC News, Foley, using the instant messenger user name "Maf54," repeatedly tried to meet the teen.
In one alleged instant message exchange, Foley tried to arrange a dinner with the page:

Maf54: I miss you lots since san diego.
Teen: ya I cant wait til dcMaf54: :)
Teen: did you pick a night for dinner
Maf54: not yet...but likely FridayTeen: ok...ill plan for Friday then
Maf54: that will be fun
The earlier instant messages released by ABC News involved the same Maf54 username.

On Friday, Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) resigned from Congress, after ABC News published inappropriate emails and sexually explicit instant messages that Foley sent to underage boys.

Out performers Sir Elton John and Tommy Kirk honored as Disney Legends

Since 1987, Disney has been honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy in the fields of music, journalism, art, performance, engineering and business. This year, Disney President and CEO Robert A. Iger handed out Disney Legends Awards to 12 people, including two out performers: legendary singer/songwriter Sir Elton John (The Lion King) and actor Tommy Kirk (Old Yeller, The Absent-Minded Professor). A special award was given posthumously to ABC News anchor Peter Jennings for his years of service.
"This annual ceremony, now in its 19th year, gives all of us at Disney a moment to remember the importance of our past achievements and to recognize those who embody this company's constant focus on delivering unparalleled creativity, quality and innovation to our audiences around the world," said Iger.
The Disney Legends Award was established to honor the men and women who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy. The first recipient of this prestigious distinction was actor Fred MacMurray (The Shaggy Dog), and since that time 203 Disney Legends have been named, including this year's recipients. Past Disney Legends include Julie Andrews, Steve Martin and Dick Van Dyke.

Rep. Barney Frank talks about the Foley scandal

Even though at least two other members of Congress have dallied with pages in the past (Rep. Gerry Studds, D-Mass., with a male page in 1973, and Rep. Dan Crane, R-Ill., with a female page circa 1983), Mark Foley's current scandal and admission of being gay seem to have set the D.C. closet on fire.
One of the few out politicians on Capitol Hill, Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., (who survived his own scandal involving a male prostitute in 1989) gives us his take on Foley and on being a gay politician in Washington.

What do you think will be the political fallout of the Foley scandal?

This makes it very, very likely the Democrats will win the House back in November. It's easy to punish a party when it's not the presidency itself.

Was it common knowledge in Washington that Foley was gay?

Both sides of the aisle knew; it was an open secret. Foley would get people in Florida thinking he was out up north, but that was not the case. Once, at a congressional Christmas party at the White House, my ex-boyfriend Herb went up to Foley, who was with a female date, and said to him, "Why don't you get a real date?" Foley didn't say anything.
It's funny how a lot of gay male politicians in Washington came with male dates to these events during the Clinton years, but then showed up with females under Bush.

What do you think was the role of gay Republicans in all this?

Apparently, Kirk Fordham, Foley's ex-chief of staff and Rep. (Thomas, the GOP campaign committee chairman) Reynolds' chief of staff, is a very active gay Republican, (and) also had some role in the hush-up. (As of Wednesday, Fordham is no longer on Reynolds' staff.) There are others who were involved that I can't mention since they aren't out. They are all more like secret Jews.

How do the gay Republicans reconcile their consciences?

A lot of them chose between their gayness and their party. I'm sure the group of gay Republican staffers hid Foley's actions as best they could.
This is a real crisis, since before, gays in the Republican Party were willing to be tolerated, but now Republicans will now be more nervous having gay people in positions of power. They have been critical of people who are out and gay -- there could be a real purge of gays in the Republican Party now. It's probably just enough for people to be perceived to be gay.

Do you think the media has unfairly exploited the gay angle to the scandal?

Newt Gingrich said the Republicans couldn't have publicly reprimanded Foley or they would be accused of gay-bashing. That's just gibberish. There would probably be just as much uproar if it was an underage female, because of Foley's work with children. In fact, I think the media has been fairly good about not gay-bashing this scandal.

Nobody could have ever believed that the country that still in 1989, when F.W. De Klerk, became President, was fighting with the apartheid, could become one of the most brilliant examples of pluralism, democracy and tolerance (http://crf-usa.org/bria/bria12_2.html).

When Nelson Mandela went out of jail and became the first Black president in South Africa only 12 years ago (1994), South Africa made gigantic steps towards the future. Today’s South African constitution is one of most, if not the most, advanced constitution in the world.

A country with two official languages (Afrikaner and English) and 11 languages in total including Zulu and Swahili.

The arrival of Reverend Desmond Tutu opened up the doors to a new tolerance in religion as well, an example many Christians, Jewish and Muslim should seriously take into consideration.

I have a special personal relationship with South Africa. I went there two times almost 7 years ago, just 5 years after the victory of Nelson Mandela.

I don’t want to talk about the beauty of Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, but I prefer to talk about my personal experience in Johannesburg, Joburg as they call it, and even more importantly in Soweto.

The center of Joburg was extremely rich for few Afrikaners (the ex Boers/ Dutch). During the apartheid South Africa was a pyramid of races and languages literally one on top of the other. The Afrikaners were the most racists, then the English and then the Chingalese and other Asian groups up to the Zulus and other tribes. Still today young Afrikaners who have black friends cannot invite them at their parent’s houses but the situation is quickly changing.
The center of Joburg was only accessible to white people and to those black people who showed a special employment card which demonstrated they could work in that area.
Today, most of the population lives in the suburbs in special residential areas while the center of the city, immediately abandoned by the white population after 1994, became the center of violence, criminality and prostitution with one of the highest level of AIDS in the world. Hotels which once cost $400/night now they cost $4/night.

During the last years a lot of work has been done to reduce corruption and prostitution thank to the great campaign of Mandela and Bono to fight against the pharma companies to provide free “pills cocktails” for the HIV positive and AIDS infected.

After having literary being in hell downtown Joburg (I could get out of my car only in certain areas) I moved to Soweto, probably the most spiritual and human experience in my life, when you understand the meaning of being homesick of Africa. Soweto is a huge area with a population of about 5,000,000 people.

They are extremely poor and their houses had been built with the roofs of the bus stops, mud and other material found in the garbage.
These people have been humiliated, arrested, raped, hit and violated so many times by the white South African police they should hate white people just smelling them. Well Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu taught them tolerance and respect for the human being and even if I was the only white person there to visit the town with a black guide they offered me food and they invited me in their homes. I went to visit Mandela’s and Tutu’s houses and I finally stopped in a school. Tens of children with their South African flags and singing the national anthem surrounded me and started kissing and hugging me and their teacher brought me in to see their drawings. I still believe I’ve been touched by God and blessed for that unique experience.

Well, in the last 12 years South Africa demonstrate to the World the meaning of the words freedom, democracy, pluralism, love and tolerance.

South Africa not only will host the next Soccer World Cup in 2010, but just today gave an important lesson to all those country which took centuries to get rid of their prejudice and intolerance of any kind.

Thank you South Africa …. You really have a big special place in my heart.
